Read the novel Silas Marner by George Eliot (Dover Thrift Edition, ISBN 0486292460) and complete the following study guide. Answer the questions in complete sentences using no source other than the novel and your own brain. (No Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, etc. That would be cheating.) I will collect this assignment on the first day of class as your first grade for the school year.
- At the beginning of the novel, how do the villagers of Raveloe feel about Silas Marner? Why?
- How does the Lantern Yard sect determine the guilt or innocence of Silas Marner? What is the effect of the verdict on Silas?
- One theme of the novel is that selfishness can destroy a person. What details suggest the selfishness of Dunstan Cass, and what ultimately happens to him?

Read the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (Dover Thrift Edition, ISBN 0486424499) and complete the following study guide questions. - When Jane returns to Thornfield, what revelation does Rochester make to her? Did you find this surprising?
- Who is Bertha, and how does Jane find out about her?
- Name and briefly describe the members of the Rivers family. How does Jane come to be with them?
- What question does St. John ask Jane? What is her answer, and why?
- What has happened at Thornfield in Jane's absence?
- How has Rochester changed? Has the relationship between Rochester and Jane changed? Explain.
- How does the novel conclude? Did you find the ending satisfactory? Why, or why not?
